I love to observe people, and I have a very special weakness for eating people. You know, the moment when a person looks at the meal, the concetration, the pleasure or hesitation, the joy...the dread before the first bite. Some people eat as if they don´t realize they are eating, some people forget the world for a split second, some people look like martyrs, some people look like solving the most important world problem, some people just nibble at their food, some people look around like anybody would jump at them and steel their food ...for this split second before the first bite we reveal a lot about ourselves...
My mum had a very special way of eating . She savored every bite, loved to eat, there was always enough food in our house, she had a stocked pantry, and always made a sign of the cross when slicing bread. She was unhappy when I did not finish my meal and she never ever threw food away. I will never forget the look in her eyes, when she started eating - careful, ...grateful...And every food was special, even the most simple food. Bread and butter for example...or new potatoes. Cooked new potatoes with a little butter and salt. Every year in spring she cooked them and put them into a bowl and we took a potatoe, peeled it , put a little butter and salt on it...and then the first bite...delicious...life could not get much better than this:)

My mum knew what it meant to be hungry. Really hungry, not just an hour before supper hungry. Concetration camp hungry.
So every year I cook my new potatoes and remember my mum while eating them...And I am very grateful...
