The Dark Side.

2008.05.06

The first two shots were take at the foot of Mount Snowdon in Wales (Snowdon is over a little on the right). The last two shots were taken whilst on Snowdon.

Holidays for me whilst growing up were nearly always around this area of Wales. The 2 1/2 hour drive from the Midlands consisted of me, my sister and our dog Tess in the back of the car with my mother and father in the front. Many a time I moaned that we never got to travel abroad "like everyone else" (we did, but this was prior to Tess joining the household), however many of our happier times as a family were during our holidays and weekend breaks over in Wales; there wasn't an activity we didn't do...

My dad and I walked up Snowdon when I was 14 and16 years on, I still remember it well; it was a gloriously sunny day and the sun freckles I caught that day are still on each of my shoulders...as you can see from the pictures, this time was a different story - the weather was awful and we could only go as far as Clogwyn (about 3/4 of the way up) due to the severity of the weather. The last picture was quickly taken on our way down, just to capture how frightfully awful the weather was.

I believe if it wasn't for the years of holidays in Wales, I wouldn't have the excitement and passion for travel that I do now for seeing new places across the world. I read every travel book going (and still do!) and as soon as I graduated from university I travelled to the furthest place possible from the UK...just because I could and I guess to see what else the world had to offer.

It was nice to go back and visit Wales...

stormfish oh yeah, these family excursion revisited... i know what you're talking about. in my case, it was some hills in the midst of germany called "harz" which we always went to. it wasn't that lousy foggy weather, though - but it was something that made me promise to go really travelling when i'm grown up for sure!

well, i did my bit, and now settled in switzerland, with a dog that can't fly and a wife that doesn't like to travel, i'm back to the foggy, foggy times of having nowhere to go... *sigh*

"the dark side" is a good title. i usually think of pink floyd's gorgeous album when i hear it.

vollenda Wonderful post with fantastic scenics. I really enjoyed hearing about your trips with Tess and the family and how they are the reason you like to travel. I, too, loved the family trips we took with our dog. If only Spike liked to travel. ;)

Peche Snowden is reminding me of the alps and north-east of Victoria, where we just were... that slight fog, the crisp cold, bouts of rain... these shots are superbly done: the vignetting adds such a beautiful touch, Em, and my favourite is the last. The feeling of being alone with nature, part of the fog... I love it.
But I must say, it's lovely to read how Wales and your family trips sparked off the travel bug in you... Visiting the place where that all started, what memories you would have had flooding back :)
xoxo

ppooria wonderfull post, I like the light reflecting from that little and old river in No.3, which reminds, we can sit there and waiting for another raining or some water again..

JuliaGotz your history tied to this landscape deepens the images for me. even without the text, that very bad weather gave you some haunting, beautiful pictures.
