majikmonkee Great set. I still get a great sense of movement from the pictures, and the blurring helps add to that sometimes. You did well.

777STAN Very GOOD for a first attempt at action photography!

When I prepare for action photos, like this that are on the level plane, I like to use a tripod with the horizontal swivel unlocked.

It is, of course trickier with more than one skateboarder, for example. It would be wise in that case to choose one and track/pan him or her from left to right or right to left as appropriate.

When a tripod is unavailable, then try leaning firmly against something solid, like a building, brick wall, or part of the "half-pipe" that 'boarders' use. The ideal second choice would be a brick wall that is low enough & close enough to the action for you to be behind it leaning on it with your elbows on top holding the camera firmly with arm muscles taut, so that your arms and body could form a sort-of make-shift tripod.

Finally, my third favorite choice is the one I often have to go with because of limited reaction-time. 1. Stand firmly with both legs together. 2. Muscles up & down body firm, yet relaxed enough at the shoulders to swivel for the pan shot. 3. Hold camera firmly to face with elbows "locked" against your sides.

Bottom Line: Pan shots are tough to master, but anyone can improve as long as you are willing to go easy on yourself, and plan for many, many, many blurry practice shots.

That's why photography is like the game of golf! The greats aren't great because they are great every shot! The greats are great because they keep on swinging when the wannabes quit! :)
