H.M.S. Surprise

2009.10.08
Constructed like a computer (think loom) with all running rigging led aft, these ships where the peak of technology at the time.
Designed for months at sea. A floating hostel / fortress..
Yet sail remains the ONLY way for an individual to circumnavigate the 75% of the planet that is water.
Sure, materials have greatly improved but it's still wind, weather and waves that decide a sailor's fate.
As we say, a bad day of sailing beats a good day at the office any time.

A double wheel to turn a rudder the size of a flattened Volkswagon.

The only woman you might see for months. And she's giving you the silent treatment.

A Naval 24-pounder (it shot a 24 pound cannon ball).
The men would remove the rear wheels to gain elevation enabling the artillery crew to shoot-out masts BUT without wheels they had no recoil to enable the cannon to clear the gunport for reloading (get it?)...make that one shot count boys !!

12 sheets to the wind...

Kim Fantastic! I love rough texture of the ropes and the smoothness of the wood.
