I have noticed the world over that people all generally have the same glazed expression as they sit on the subway being transported to who knows where :)

This is true but it is not unlike an elevator when you are confined with people not of your choice nor with any purpose... and so we mostly tend to ignore them... probably fearing that if we make eye contact we might get dragged in to unwanted conversations? 8^)
