Inspectors check bridge cracks
Tony Moore | August 17, 2007 - 1:46PM
No decision on whether it is necessary to close down Brisbane's busiest bridge will be made until after Main Roads inspectors finish visual checks, which are now underway.
Main Roads' inspectors are now inspecting holes drilled into reinforcement bars when a construction company added a gantry beneath the Captain Cook Bridge to carry electrical cabling as part of an Energex project.
It will take six hours for work crews to crawl through the area where the cabling is stored
The Energex/Main Roads project ran from July 2006 till February 2007.
Disgruntled employees from the construction company who completed the work, Mostia Constructions, told the Courier Mail this morning that up to 680 holes struck the reinforcing bars.
Transport Minister Paul Lucas said there were more than 5000 reinforcing bars on the south side of the Captain Cook Bridge.
Mr Reeves said the Department was concerned at the allegations that cracks had begun to occur.
"There is a suggestion that there are cracks as a result of the holes that have been drilled. That's what we will be looking for," Mr Reeves said.
The Department closed the Riverside Expressway last year when cracks were found in the Ann Street off-ramp.
