Back Yard Birds Bathing

2008.02.13
A female cardinal drops in for a drink of water. She doesn't mix with the roudy robins and starlings in the pond.

Four robins and a starling bathe in the shallows of the pond.

Photographing bathing birds between dipping their heads in the water and shaking their feathers is challenging. You have to shoot before you see what you want to take. Luckily they are somewhat consistent with the timing in each round of baths.

A white-throated sparrow fluffs and shakes water off of his feathers.

oooh, this feels good!

Yikes, looks like someone is watching!

Oh well, just keep shaking.

Getting ready to splash down.

What a great expression! Straight-on views of birds make their beaks look funny.

The underrated starling has an amazing sheen and intricate spotting.

Water really does roll of their feathers.

One squawk from a blue jay and everyone else retreats while he gets his drink.

Hundreds of robins and starlings descended on my pond two days ago to bathe. The white throated sparrow held its own among the bigger birds and the cardinal kept her distance.
