Intricate Ice Patterns

2008.02.24
It started out being a normal winter hike with leftover snow on the ground. Then I looked more closely...

A thin layer of ice remained on top of the grass.

At 38 degrees, I thought all the ice would have melted, but small patches remained.

This is a fragile sculpture reaching across a crook of a tree.

This is a whimsical covering over seed pods.

The most extraordinary ice patterns were on (and barely touching) the raspberry branches.

This Queen Anne's Lace is all tangled up in ice.

The ice was so thin here that it folded at the end.

I can't figure out how these slivers of ice are hanging on!

This formation is on a pine tree.

How this ice kept intact is beyond me. Just a touch and it would shatter on the ground.

This formation stood straight up on top of a tree trunk and was only 1/8 inch thick.

Here the ice reaches across a hollow tree trunk.

I went for a hike at Armentrout Preserve in Whitpain Township (PA), a 56 acre tract of land owned by the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association and Whitpain Township. What a wonderful surprise I had when I discovered all the tiny, glass-like sheets of ice throughout the site.

Hadrien The last one is amazing. There's something kind of abstract in this picture.
