Birds, part 2

2008.03.10
A pine siskin fluffed up on a very cold day.

A family of ducks swimming away from me as fast as possible.

Female rose breasted grosbeak

A well placed goldfinch!

A ruby throated hummingbird approaching the pulmonaria, an early spring flower with a perfect shape for his long beak.

The carolina wren, a little bird with the biggest voice.

Female cardinal, a year 'round Philadelphia inhabitant. Cardinals are the last birds you'll hear chipping at night.

White throated sparrow

Two starlings having a grand time on the woodpeckers' suet feeder.

A fox sparrow visited my yard in early spring and stayed for about two weeks.

A young cowbird. This one was raised by a cardinal family. I have photos of him being fed by his cardinal father (unfortunately the photos didn't turn out well).

A barn swallow perched on an electric cord. The nest is on this beam and the whole family has to squish into the nest since there's very little head room.

A house finch eating wild cherries. He's not stained; that's his color!

This was fledgling day for the young house wren babies. They looked so surprised when they managed to fly for the first time.

A goldfinch singing in the rain. Goldfinches have the most cheerful voices.

A starling deciding which bird feeder to tackle next. Starlings do tackle; they don't just eat.

Oops!

A red breasted nuthatch has been here all winter. Maybe two of them actually.

An extraordinary sight, the eastern towhee arrives about the same day every year and leaves in a day or two.

This bush in Cape May, NJ was full of yellow rumped warblers
