Birds, part 3

2008.03.16
Northern flicker, dedicated to Montanawind and her mom

Male rose-breasted grosbeak

Coopers hawk considering a picnic at my bird feeders

Baby robin stuck in a bush with no flying experience to speak of

Red bellied woodpecker, often mistakenly called red-headed woodpecker, but oddly enough, it was named for the pinkish hue on its stomach.

I'm fascinated by the beauty in a common starling, a bird we usually overlook or get irritated with because it travels in large groups, makes lots of noice and eats too much.

A cedar waxwing. You can't see the tip of the wing which looks like it was dipped in red wax.

I was surprised to find a green heron hunting in the pond behind my house in Philadelphia. There are lots of tadpoles and mosquito larvae here.

A male cardinal

A carolina wren at the suet feeder.

A young carolina wren being blown in the wind.

The famous Yankee flipper twirls when something as heavy as a squirrel gets on it. Squirrels hang on as long as they can, but it's tough when you get dizzy. I keep this pretty low to the ground so their fall isn't far. They are like cats though; they usually land on their feet.

A song sparrow eating, not singing.

Mourning dove - worth taking the time to look at the details.

A female downy woodpecker can't believe I put cashews out for her.

Must be a female ruby-throated hummingbird because that's the only kind we get here.

Female cardinal. Cardinals tend to stay close to their mates, but I have yet to photograph them side by side.

basisimages Absolutely superb shots. (Perhaps dribbling them out just a few at a time would keep your audience on tenterhooks?)
