The message on their website, "Our site is currently undergoing essential maintenance. We apologise for any inconvenience caused. Please check back later" doesn't quite tell the story. Indeed it doesn't even begin to tell the story.
Between the 27th December and the 5th January every Woolworths store in the UK will cease trading. Our local branch in Southend has already shut. Personally, I will not miss it at all. For me they never seemed to stock quite what I wanted, their prices were not competetive and their customer service was not not good at all. For years I have avoided the place and it seems I am not alone.
For the 27,000 people who will lose their jobs this week though it is a tragedy. I wish them well in finding new jobs, though in the present climate that could prove a difficult task.
Having said it is a tragedy though, it is not on the same scale as tomorrow's posting for which I have just returned from taking the pictures.

I'm sure that everyone who lives in the UK will miss their local Woolies store, even if they only went in there every now and then for a bag of pic 'n' mix - it was just knowing that they could. A sad loss on the high street, although it will not be the only one in 2009.
