302. Public Art in Southend

Crest on the Civic Centre.

Queen Victoria always points out to sea. I don't know what interests her so much, but she's been pointing for as long as I can remember.

Mural in the library.
pixel
Mural on the side of a resaurant (closed).
pixel
Mural on the wall of the "Childrens Sculpture Garden". The little grey blob on the right is one of the best sculptures.
pixel
A mural in one of my favourite pubs. It's a bit surreal though. An English flag, but the only Englishman (Henry Cooper) gazes down like a ghost, whilst four men from The Americas (Jairzinho, Pele, Foreman, Ali) battle it out to be the true champions of sport.

A fountain in the town.
pixel
This is my favourite piece.

But it is sited outside the police station where the onle people to see it are cops and crims.

The Beecroft Gallery has a fine collection of seascapes, and is host to the suprisingly good Open Essex art competition. This place is a little gem.
pixel
The Focal Point gallery usually has slide shows and video installations that I don't understand.

I've saved the worst till last. The Milleneum clock delivered so late it was almost 2001 when it went up. It looks hideously tacky and only tells the right time twice a day. It's been broken for far longer than it ever worked properly. The sooner they remove this embarrassing eyesore, the better.

There are places in this world that are worth visiting just for the public art alone. This post is about saving anyone a wasted journey who is under the misapprehension that Southend might be one of those places.

????? Victoria points that way because she saw herself as the Matriarch, the Mary, La Mare...she references both the sea, and the direction of Egypt, once known as Tameri or Merita (the land of Mary) again referencing the matriarch or Isis.
