11. You Don't Miss What You've Got Until It's Gone

Stumped (this is nearby, but not on the roundabout).

The House of Horrors in the background.

Tie A Yellow Ribbon!

Stop! It the last tree left on the roundabout.

Look at the bright side, now the trees have gone we get a great view of those ugly flats...

... and the lorries...

... and of the backside of Oscar Deutsch's house.
Those broken white signs in the middle are from when local businesses used to sponsor the planting of flowers on the roundabout.

For a town that used to earn it's living as a seaside resort, most of Southend is quite ugly. Yesterday it got a little uglier. There used to be a large clump of trees in the middle of one of the town's largest roundabouts. Yesterday all were chopped down leaving just one left.

Town planners claim it's for the best, but I'm not conviced. Time will tell.

Anger as trees are chopped

elizzi bad move..chopping down the trees..should be done as a last resort...they enhance the environment....

????? I am sorry for the trees,i guess stupid people are every where !!....but i like your urban shots.
????? · 2010-01-11: 19:07
smbunation Hmmm... I'm never 'for' any type of deforestation... Sooo, I cannot see this is for the best. Nice documentation though.

lookagain "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot." So sad....saddest of all are the birds in the tree in #4.....guess when that's gone they can start perching on the cold concrete....:(
lookagain · 2010-01-11: 21:28
????? How strange. I can't imagine why trees in a roundabout would be in anyone's way unless they're going to put up a statue or fountain. Too bad.

thebronzebow That is a bummer. Hate losing trees.
thebronzebow · 2010-01-12: 01:17
????? We are extremely proud of this scheme" ???
"arrive via different forms of transport and get straight into the heart of the town" ????

What sort of backward thinking is this, when every other town in the UK is looking at ways to pedestrianise?
You should send every single councillor who endorsed this decision a link to this blog Jon

CAN YOU READ THIS, ANNA WAITE ?!!

BECAUSE EVERYONE ELSE ACROSS SOUTHEND, THE UK AND THE REST OF THE WORLD CAN !!

LAZYWASP Why did they leave one?....Is there a replanting scheme?? Were the trees damaged in any way??
LAZYWASP · 2010-01-12: 07:04
jennye That's horrible!!
jennye · 2010-01-12: 08:38
dontblink Not sure what a regeneration scheme is but so far I don't like it. Such a shame
dontblink · 2010-01-12: 08:40
KatWojdasiewicz I love your pictures. How you make them so clear and sharp?
KatWojdasiewicz · 2010-01-12: 11:11
eternity65 always a shame to see trees being cut down for some stupid idea. I don't get that woman's explanation one bit, what difference can those trees make to entering from different forms of transportation on this roundabout? It's not as if it's big enough to plant a train or bus station, harbour or airfield there is it.
Well i guess she would be an ideal person to go into Belgian politics, she is as daft as our politicians ;-)

onlyricky It is just like desires! you want them .. but once you get it, you lose interest... LOL of course depends on the desires!

AS for me, I miss snow because I dont have it a lot! :))
onlyricky · 2010-01-12: 14:58
etodd80 Thats a bit odd...I wonder what they plan to do with the round about if they don't want trees there.
etodd80 · 2010-01-12: 16:23

MoMac · 2010-01-13: 09:26
