70 years ago, 700 hundred "little ships" crossed the English channel to rescue 338,000 British and French troops stranded on the beaches at Dunkirk. Among them were six cockle boats from Leigh-on-Sea.

Pictured here is one of the modern day boats, the aptly named Liberator in the mud at Leigh. One of the boats, the Endeavour, today took part in a flotilla to Dunkirk to commemorate the events of WWII.
