190. I Want A Brown Baby Like All The Other Mums On The Estate

All of the eggs here came from the same box. One was white and five were brown. This set me thinking about egg colour. Do chickens always lay eggs of the same colour or is there some difference? I don't know.

I was also intrigued by the fact that the tones of the brown eggs looked quite similar in reality and in the original shot. The differences in shade are far more pronounced in black and white.

If anyone is wondering about the seemingly dodgy title of this post, here is the original source.
HoosierAtHeART Good question!
Some people seem to think white chickens lay white eggs but at least that I know otherwise!

atszabo Is Estate the name of public housing in Britain? Not a very subtle satire of the lower classes, is it?
On the egg front, I always thought unhappy chickens in those crowded chicken factories lay white eggs, the cage free ones do the brown ones...no I am really confused...

girafferacing As soon as I saw this on the front page it made me chuckle - I'd forgotten about the Slobs! I love the way your sense of photographic humour works. :-) Funnily enough I had a box of mixed colour eggs (free range organic ones) last week and it struck me as being unusual at the time.

smbunation Excellent ponder. It puzzles me too. Great exhibition of gray-scale too.

jet28 Interesting :-)))

wildduck The colour of the egg depends on the chickens species mostly, but it depends on what they are eating too. The colour has nothing to do with the quality.

lookagain Cool image! I think it's interesting that you used a color word in your title, but the image is in B/W!

onlyricky hmm
I don't know anything about eggs or hens... I just know they put eggs, and sometimes yea they are with different colors... i guess maybe it is due the minerals they eat? sometimes if there is a lot they put eggs with a dark shade ?
I don't know..guess we have to ask to Mrs.Hen.

thebronzebow as I understand it, different species of chickens lay different colored eggs. Great shot!
