Separation of Mixtures

2008.07.03
Filtration - used to separate an insoluble solid (e.g. chalk or calcium carbonate) from a liquid (e.g. water)

Evaporation - used to separate a dissolved solid (e.g. salt or sodium chloride NaCl) from a solution (e.g. salt solution)

Distillation - separates a liquid (e.g. water) from a solution (e.g. sea water) or a mixture of two or more liquids which have different boiling point (e.g. mixture of alcohol and water)

Chromatography - separates coloured components in a mixture (e.g. spot of dye)

A mixture consists of two or more substances which are not joined together chemically.

Many mixture contain useful substances. However, the substances need to be separated before they can be used.

Mixtures are separated by physical methods. That is, the substances in a mixture are separated but do not change into other substances.
