Visiting Epcot Today

2008.05.03
Ian has his cooling spray bottle ready as we wait for the shuttle bus to take us to Epcot. It is feeling rather hot as the temperature is around 90 degrees and it has been feeling humid and muggy with no wind.

It just looks hot, no?

These lizards are everywhere here. This guy is about 4 inches long. They range from 2-8 inches and are very quick and almost impossible to catch.

Epcot is not your regular Disney theme park. It's more of a mini World's Expo. Here we are in a building sponsored by Waste Management company and are working our way through a demonstration of how recycling and landfill technology work. Ian is pushing a computerized mini trash truck full of virtual trash.

At this site I got to ride a Segway scooter for about 1 minute. No, that is not me on the scooter but I did manage to stay on the machine for 1 minute, as this guy did.

A butterfly garden at Epcot.

Test Track at Epcot. Sponsored by GM the idea is you ride this car through a seres of road tests such as braking with and without ABS. The good part is accelerating to high speed and banking a tight sloped turn pulling what feels close to 1 G. Fun but my Cayenne is faster.

A hummer made from plywood and assorted junk. Cool!

The Living Seas exhibit at Epcot had a nice aquarium.

A Sea Turtle flies past the glass.

The indoor area of the Mexico exhibit featuring a restaurant (San Angel Inn), shops and a Mexican promotional ride. The restaurant was rservation only so we made reservations for tomorrow.

Fireworks at Epcot. That is one big flame of gas on the water a part of the show.

That big golf ball at Epcot still looks pretty cool.

Uh, do you think Ian is tired?

The answer to the previous photo is, of course, yes.

My working trip in Seattle included a lot of time visiting the people who had helped care for Dad and thanking them for all they did. It was both a difficult and also sort of a good, reflective time of the trip; I suppose a part of the mourning process.

While I was away, Ian and Tracy were both sick for several days and did not spend as much time at the Disney parks as planned, so Tracy upgraded the park tickets to non-expiring. This way we will be able to use all the visits, events and whatever that we paid for, no matter how long it takes. Years even. It takes the pressure off of us that we have to rush around and do everything in a limited amount of time.

Strange moment of the day; I was visiting my broker's assistant, Lindsey, today and mentioned the fatal accident of Samantha (my cousin's daughter) when Lindsey stopped me and said she had heard about this from her friend, who had known Samantha and grew up around her and went to the funeral in Vancouver, WA. I had heard there was over 1000 people at the funeral. Still, that was all the way at the other end of the state.

Friday I had to be up and out of the house by 5:30 to catch my morning flight. The airplane was late out of the gate. The flight was pretty bumpy all the way into Chicago and we didn't make up any time on this leg. We passed over Montana, which is still snow covered as far as I could see. We had a short layover in Chicago, just long enough for lunch, then was 40 minutes late from the gate there. I arrived back in Orlando about 45 minutes behind schedule, caught the Disney shuttle and arrived back at Fort Wilderness around 9:00 p.m.

Saturday we spent most of the day at Epcot in an area I hadn't been to before. The last and only other time I was here was 2 years ago when I flew my Dad, his caregiver and much of the family to Wilderness Lodge for several days. That was an adventure in itself as most of the family flew out of Seattle while Tracy, Ian and I flew out of Boise. Conditions in Orlando the day of our flights was so bad that SWA closed their terminals much of the day and flights were not allowed in. By the end of the day everyone from Seattle snuck into Orlando during a short window while Tracy, Ian and I got stuck in Salt Lake City for the night. Anyway, we had a very quick visit to Epcot once we all got together and the memories of being there with Dad are still fresh. We only saw a very small part of the park at that time though.

Today we visited more of the interactive side of Epcot and I took a spin on the newer fast ride there, Test Track. I also got to take a Segway for a short spin, enjoyed a walk through a nice aquarium after a spin on the Nemo ride and stuck around to watch the firework show after dinner at the Chinese restaurant.
