Charleston, SC to Myrtle Beach

2008.05.18
Ian helps me make repairs on the RV this morning.

Found another problem. The hole the locking pin passes through here was damaged in the crash. I'm unable to pull the towbar out of the receiver because the inner hole is swedged, possible along with the receiver pin hole. Bottom line... the tow bar won't slide out. Yet.

Is the top sign (no swimming) really neccessary?

This campground had a cool rental caboose in addition to cabins.

Ian is checking out the fish and looking for alligators in the lake.

Ian has been waiting to fly his kite. The wind was a bit much for it today though.

Myrtle Beach.

Tracy chases a pail heading downwind.

Looking south towards Garden City Beach to the south.

Downtown Myrtle Beach is off in the distance as a sudden mass of condominiums and resorts.

On the west coast most of the mollusks are thin shelled. All the shells I saw here are very thick.

That's about 3/8" of thickness.

Ian and Tracy build a city. A rogue wave wiped it out a couple minutes after this photo.

A flight of pelicans passes by. Most of the time they are skimming just above the waves. We often see them searching for food fromabout 40 feet high. When they spot something they wing over, fold their wings in and dive head first straight down into the water.

Ian attempts a little surfing on his wave board.

Whoops.

The campground had it's own Lazy River... a big plus in my book. You can just float in slow circles around the circuit.

I'm changing my tactic in trying to get caught up... I'm posting the most recent day and then will try to bring the previous dates up to date. Between trying to cram as much into a day as possible and at times just not feeling like writing, I am having trouble falling behind.

We woke to a cool and dry day at our campground at Mt. Pleasant near Charleston. It was a good time to replace the damages tow rig on the Jeep and between the rigs. I got the mounts on the Jeep replaced just fine but couldn't slide the tow bar out of the 2" receiver on the RV... I even tried pulling it off with the Jeep. I found that the receiver pin hole was damaged and that the tow bar insert was swedged out in this area. It will need to be hit with a rivet gun and drift pin to be able to replace the tow bar. I also found one of the main mounting bolts that hold the hitch to the frame had stretched and become loose. It will have to be cut off and replaced.

It was a short trip today to Myrtle Beach, just 89 miles in 2hr 42 minutes (stopped for breakfast). As we drove along we saw more and more motorcycles heading the other way along with trailers loaded with numerous choppers, custom bikes along with what appeared to be commercial support trailers. The flow grew until we pulled into Myrtle Beach where we found it was the last day of Bike Week there. It makes me miss my Harley! It was perfect weather for riding.

We checked in at Pirateland, one of the huge campgrounds right along the beach. Over 1000 spaces. What got my attention was they had a lazy river by the pool.

They weather was very windy, especially on the beach. Our site was just one space from the from the beach. We tried to fly Ian's kite but it just wanted to fold up in the wind. We did have a nice walk along the beach at sunset but, being a west-coaster, it just felt wrong to have the sun set inland from the ocean shore! I was brought up watching the sun set over the water.

It was so nice to be able to sleep with the a/c off and the windows open all night for a change. We all slept very well with the ocean breeze flowing through the RV.

As a note... gas for the Jeep cost $3.699/gal here. I think I saw it as low as $3.63.
