So we went to Auschwitz on this day.

I could not process it all.

Giftgas, Auschwitz I, Crematorium, Barrack, Standing Confinement Cell, Sei Ruhig!, SS, Hair, Textile, Nazi, Pole, Plunder, German, Shoes, Jew, Birkenau.

1.3 million killed

The experience was overwhelming on so many levels.

1.3 million visitors annually

Simply being present in such a site of violence and extermination is painful.

Eye glasses that look like modern art

Then I have qualms about the way that the site is used for tourism and for money. The tour lasted most of the morning and part of the afternoon.

Medical Experimentation

Not once was I moved to take a picture. I just couldn't. I wouldn't be one of those taking a picture with those gates

"Arbeit macht frei"

and a smiling face.The site is a place of remembrance and learning, not my souvenir. And it just seemed silly to gloss anything over with a picture from a restaurant.
