Day 213: Historic Fort Snelling
2012.07.31
Window from the Fort
We had a day to burn before being able to move into my house, so we went to Fort Snelling for the Afternoon, after we had brought my car to the mechanic in St. Louis Park.
Fort Snelling was interesting, if only for looking at how history gets presented. We learned that the Historical Society only recently began incorporating Native American History into the fort's information. But I was not really interested in the re-enactments, etc. I wanted to hear about the way that the fort was instrumental in shaping the Minnesota that we have today, i.e. instrumental in forcing the Native Americans out of their lands. It got a nod, but I wanted more.
The most interesting fact about the fort is that Dred Scott was a resident of the fort with his wife. This also hadn't been displayed at the fort until recent years, although he is likely the most important resident that the fort ever had.
Not what I expected-the view wasn't as beautiful as I had thought. Glad I stopped by, though.
