Lucky Charm

2007.01.12

I've known him more then half my life, and I still don't know when he's joking and when he's serious. I always feel just a little dumb in the face of his unpredictable, acerbic and boisterous wit.

tortoise The first is a nice portrait. The second, however, is priceless. Caught between a sneer and a grin. Or a sneering grin. Or something else entirely. When I think of an inscrutable expression, a stony rictus generally comes to mind. A mask. A pokerface. How can a face be simultaneously so expressive and yet so completely inscrutable? It's a good capture, but for a portrait like that, first you have to elicit the expression. Therein lies your strength.

monkeyface Great shots! If I saw him in an alley... I'd run the other way.

JuliaGotz Thanks guys. You would run the other way, monkeyface? Oh dear. I don't know why.

monkeyface There's a certain ruthless quality that comes across when I look at his eyes. It's the second pic that scared me. I think it's wonderful that a photo can evoke so many different emotions.

JuliaGotz Yes, see - you don't know if you should take him seriously either! That's perfect.
