Medieval

2007.02.23

Tonight I am elated after a brilliant performance, 'Listen, Daughters of Light', presented by The Toronto Consort.

The program, put together by the magnificent Katherine Hill, consisted of music composed and sung in convents from the 11th to the 15th century.

Seven women sang together and singly. Some works included medieval fiddle, harp and flute, five of the performers also playing an instrument at some point in the evening. There was such variety of moods - sacred, joyous, mournful, playful.

Words are useless here. If you live in Toronto, see if you can still get a ticket for tomorrow night's show.

Of course I could not take photos during the show, but when the musicians came on stage to tune their instruments before the performance began, I stole a few shots. I wanted to be as unobtrusive as possible, since I didn't know if this would be allowed. I was quite a distance away, up in the balcony.

Watching Katherine (pictures 3 and 4) tune her instruments, I was moved by the fine grace and precision of every movement. She is singing even when she is silent.

I did some post-processing to try to deal with these limited images, and in the second picture, tried to get a sense of a painting.

I feel a vow coming on.

tortoise Beautiful shots. Katherine has an ethereal grace that comes through loud and clear here.

Your joy is luminous and contagious. I dearly would love to witness this performance. Early music has long been a passion of mine, and makes up the lion's share of my classical collection. I'm going to listen to Hildegard of Bingen as I drift off to sleep, in honor of this entry.
