JuliaGotz Joice, it's from a poem, The Wasteland:

APRIL is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
Winter kept us warm, covering
Earth in forgetful snow, feeding
A little life with dried tubers.

To me, the cruelty is the pain of awakening feeling - that's how I understood it when I read it at 18. But now, I understand more - 'mixing memory and desire' - what it means to experience spring at a different stage of life.

And I love spring, all the same.

JuliaGotz Everything changes, seen through different eyes. I used to hate spiky evergreen shrubs like juniper, and now I love them - something sharp and enduring, that protects.

tortoise "But now, I understand more - 'mixing memory and desire' - what it means to experience spring at a different stage of life."

Yes. I'm feeling spring more deeply this year, in more ways, than I ever have in my life. And I live in California, where spring isn't markedly different than winter. Spring is a state of mind, right now, for me.

Also, I covet that gate. Fiercely.

mhannah55 i love the simplicity of this series. the details of the nature that's around us. the first one if my favourite. i think it's so beautiful and sad. i can feel how fragile it is...something you can look at, but can't touch without destroying it.
