girl

2007.08.13

so expressive - timeless gestures.

performing 'aristocats'

crazy for kittens. look at the vitality and strength in her - a child who spends her summers mostly at the farm, outdoors and free.

Accepting the Sacred Duty: She found one of my tiaras (yes I have MORE then one) and I pulled out a cotton nightshirt to make a princess dress. She has an innate sense of drama. She gives me a window on myself as a girl - I remember having all these dramas playing in my head - imagining having some kind of sacred mission or heroic task.

an offering, for the sake of the kingdom - the sense of story emerges from her, and we play it back and forth, on the same wavelength. I lost this unselfconscious ability in about grade one, and found it again in my forties.

She's directing now, and I'm following along.

just lovely

deleted090307 Such a special set. My niece and I play a similar game/story with some quartz I have; it's reminded me of that and the innocence that comes with it...

Beautiful shots of an even more beautiful girl.

chipotle although you filter these shots through subjective meaning, these are the ones that you can show to strangers to encourage them to let you catch the people who are meaningful to them.

your portraits are always beautiful; these, though, take you to the next level.

Richard The last three are amazing, the one with the blue background leaps of the page.

ankush vimawala nice portraits, i love the one with the kitty. and all the others too. nice work. did you use a fill in flash? or only natural lighting?
ankush vimawala · 2007-08-13: 11:59
mattdross .Great set
mattdross · 2007-08-13: 12:17
abbeyh13 she is a beauty!
the picture of her on your blue deck is just amazing!!!!
I agree a little girl who plays outdoors is awesome.
abbeyh13 · 2007-08-13: 12:38
JuliaGotz ankush, these are mostly natural light. I did use a minimal fill flash on 7 and 8. My camera allows me to set the flash at a low level, so I'm experimenting with fill.

Thank you for these comments.

Carley I love randolph's comment....and agree with it! She is perfectly lovely, as are your shots. She kind of looks like you...is she yours?

emmetan she is a beautiful beautiful model.... I love the shot with the reflection of her hand on the water....
emmetan · 2007-08-13: 18:55
JuliaGotz Your responses to this set feel special to me -to know you were touched by this.

The girl is the daughter of one of my close friends. I am very flattered that any of you think we look similar. If you look at randolph's llatest post, he talks about the way that every photo can be a kind of self-portrait. Maybe I take the picture a certain way because there is an echo in me.

Let the record show that I was much more awkward and not anywhere near as pretty when I was her age.

Hardware #7, possibly the best photo I've ever seen by you.
Hardware · 2007-08-13: 20:46
Sheldon A great series - no - the best set of colour portraits I have seen you show! Number 7 is superb but I also like 1 - it is just so fun and relaxed and we see her eyes and smile so well. Also - the red of the chair gives it a beautiful frame.
Sheldon · 2007-08-13: 21:12
vollenda She is stunning! A great natural beauty and I love her sense of drama! Your portraits of her are superb and so full of life. Also, love the tiara :)
vollenda · 2007-08-13: 23:30

baqerian nice set, well done
baqerian · 2007-08-14: 06:49
tortoise If it weren't for your desire to snap and share a few shots of your kittens, you very well might not even own a camera right now. And that would be... unthinkable. You have a gift, one that enriches us all. Not bad, not bad.
tortoise · 2007-08-14: 09:24
jendayee This is truly lovely ! That beautiful little princess reminds me of myself also... I used to play a lot, just for the fun of it, may be to escape a strict education... Love the nightshirt... I would use it in daytime... :))))
Excellent post ! Bravo !
jendayee · 2007-08-14: 10:17
MidsummerSilence "an offering" and 'the director' are my favorited. her eyes are amazing. these are all gorgeous and you can tell through the photos it's a bit of yourself... they are lovely and compelling. thank you for sharing them, and a piece of yourself, with us all!
MidsummerSilence · 2007-08-14: 12:22
kaldad Beautiful girl and beautiful photos. The one with the kitten reminded me of a photo I took about 5 years ago of my daughter with a black puppy.
kaldad · 2007-08-14: 13:44
makaid timeless...
makaid · 2007-08-14: 22:24
longimanus She reminds me of Mary Elisabeth Mastrantonio from Robin Hood (especially on no. 8). Wonderful portrait that she can be proud of later too! (All your other portrait series are very powerful and honest)
longimanus · 2007-08-16: 06:01
Gumbo classic. Thanks for sharing.
