alleycat race

2007.08.24
I decided to stay in colour for these - how could I resist?

Out of the race early, with a smashed bike and probably a concussion. Witnesses say he flew 10 feet in the air. Alleycat racing - through traffic on city streets - is a high risk sport. Motorists hate these guys as much as these guys hate bad drivers.

I'm at a checkpoint, the bike store, which is one of many in this race. Riders have to get to each checkpoint, in any order they wish, drop their bikes and go in to get recorded, then get back on the road as fast as possible. I'm staying out of the way and grabbing what I can.

One of the front runners. He's traversed the city east and west, north and south - at 5 pm on a Friday, in rush hour traffic.

I'm drawn by the intensity and commitment.

The physical ability and endurance is incredible. Everyone has a version of this lean, wiry muscle type. I think it's all about stamina, quick reflexes and no fear (or, on second thought, a hunger for excitement that outweighs fear).

race over - doesn't he look happy?

I love the culture apart.

And this guy is the winner. Beautiful expression.

Lucas Brunelle, street racer and bike film maker, with his camera helmet.

his films are as close as the rest of us can get to this crazy sport. If you can watch one of the videos on his website without feeling the excitement, you are probably dead.

the man beneath the camera

C'est La Vie - his motto, fits the occasion.

There is a bicycle film festival in Toronto right now. Coinciding with it is a street race, sponsored by my favorite bike store, La Carrera.

Streetracing videos by Lucas Brunelle on his website.

thepictureman Looks like a wild sport and good photo op. I agree, these are made for color, especially # 1. I would like to see video from the helmet cameras. What is the web site ?

vollenda Fantastic set! I've only seen a couple of the videos because mostly I have to watch with my eyes covered. I think they are insane but I like their casual attitude a whole lot more than some snooty roadies around here!

So many times I've wished for a helmet cam on my commutes to work. But I'm not sure I could wear this helmet every day!

Sheldon Colourful event! I love #7's outfit ...

Have you got a video camera on your wish list?
Sheldon · 2007-08-30: 22:34
budrons I liked this set a lot. i also watched the videos by Lucas Brunelle. It's fascinating and also a lot scary. I like biking but this is something else for sure. It would be nice to see them in Italian traffic jams.
budrons · 2007-08-31: 02:36
dogeatery crazy idea for a race! It must be quite a rush. Do they have to mind traffic laws? Do city authorities sanction or denounce the event?
