nuit blanche 1: avant minuit

2007.09.29

Half the pleasure is taking breaks for sustenance and discussion.

I think my camera really has become a relentless intrusion for some of my friends.

'People', by visiting Italian artist Mario Martinelli, captures a shadow on large screen and holds it there, fading slowly, for a few moments. Someone from the large crowd of spectators steps in front of the screen, or walks by, or leaps, and one moment's shadow is caught. It hangs there until someone else crosses the space, and then a new shadow overlaps it as it fades away.

Leaping was very popular while we were there. It made beautiful shapes. What was most wonderful about this piece was the interaction with the crowd. The audience stimulated each other, so that there would be bursts of creativity. people went up in groups to make multi armed deities and sculptures. The piece just *worked* to get that magic of a shared experience among strangers.

Some expanded for an instant in front of the screen, then shrank from what they made and rushed away as if to deny any association with it. The relationship between person and shadow fascinated me. Here, it is as if the bold shadow is chasing it's frightened person off the stage.

I love this. His shadow has a life much freer then his own, it seems. On the artist's website, he refers to "the shadow's emancipation".

Sorry to friends who check here regularly. I was very busy with work and didn't have any opportunity to photograph or post. Thanks for checking back!

Nuit Blanche
began in Paris - an all night performance art event. In a multitude of locations in the city, artists perform or present contemporary work. It runs from sunset to sunrise.

Strange to see the downtown streets packed with people searching for art, a party atmosphere in the air, crowds in unusual places. The city staying awake all night (though I didn't).

I lost a lot of potential photos due to blur. It was certainly challenging to work with the limited light. I resorted to flash a few times, and hated the result every time. If I'm going to use flash, I'll need to buy some other equipment. The camera's own flash is atrocious.

More about Mario Martinelli.

WeeklyShots Lovely shots and commentary... looks like it was a great venue for photography. Couldn't have been easy with the tricky lighting but you pulled it off very well.
