I had the camera within reach, so I took some pictures when I first woke up.

I change the cat mobile every couple of days - add tissue paper, Q-tips, pipe cleaners, feathers or twist ties, so it's always new.

I can watch them and I can entertain them, but I can't quite play WITH them the way I can with a dog. They are mostly at a slight distance, in a world I can't enter.

I'm attached to them by a flickering connection. I'm a dog that likes cats. We only know the most rudimentary terms in each other's language. They know what to do to get me up, to get me to feed them, to open doors, to play with them. They make me feel less alone, and they make me feel more alone.

Jack sneaks up on the mobile, to take it by surprise. I melt over him - his little face. I project the innocence of a very young child onto him.

Gordie watching the real birds out the window - I read him very differently then his brother. He's more of a strategist.
