After the flood, a funeral.

2007.11.18
On Nov. 10, Reverend Glen Sands passed away. He was a very well known person, who has won awards and great acclaim for his many years of service to his community. People came from far to attend his funeral on Saturday at the Baptist Church in Palmetto Point,. The church itself was full to bursting, and there were many people standing outside listening to the funeral service through big speakers set up outside the church. You could hear the organ music and the speeches all over the whole town. There was singing and some very heartfelt speeches and passionate preaching about heaven and eternal life.

I heard from people around here that the reverend was a great church leader and a great man.

Tropical Storm Noel had dumped an awful lot of rain on this part of Eleuthera a couple of weeks ago, and some roads are still flooded out, including the road from the town to the cemetery. The hearse was not going to be able to get through. That is why the pallbearers had to take the reverend’s casket on a truck.

The flowers went on a truck as well. It was the only way to get there. Two large school buses were employed to bring as many of the congregation as possible, and others followed in pick up trucks and SUV’s

On the way to the cemetery, I passed this Silk Cotton tree. I’m told it is about 100 years old. The trunk reminds me a little of baobab trees I saw in Africa.

I was the only person who walked to the cemetery, as if I hadn’t stuck out enough during the funeral, taking pictures. A couple of trucks passed me on the road as I was wading through the muddy water, and I could see they were looking at me like I was maybe a bit crazy (people have been very warm and friendly to me, even if I might seem a little odd).

At the cemetery, you can hear the ocean.

Part of the town that got flooded.

P.S. - Every time I've gone that way since, someone has stopped to give me a ride over the water. I'm sure that day, people were ready to give me a ride, but I was feeling shy and like I was going to a funeral uninvited, so I probably didn't notice.

chipotle you are a bit odd. ;-)

the guys in two look like they responded to a casting call for a remake of "live and let die."

jmsuuronen True Gotz-quality pictures, as always.
The story and the reverend is wonderful. Maybe that's something for people to remember; Live your life the way, that even others than your family wants to make a long trip just to say their final goodbye's.

He must have been a remarkable man.
