dance lights my way

2007.12.19
after the performance: Claudia Moore, Artistic Director of MOonhORse dance theatre, is a performer and choreographer. She is also the curator of Older and Reckless, an outstanding dance series. She performed tonight in an intense, gripping solo work choreographed by Tedd Robinson. The articulation of her limbs is fascinating to me, and I hope to photograph her during a rehearsal in the future.

Composer John Oswald and choreographer Bill Coleman. The first performance of the night, Happy, began with a Jazz ensemble on stage, and one dancer hanging upside down from the piano while another (Coleman) tap danced (!) - what I think you would call 'the old soft shoe'. it was a leisurely, sensual, playful movement in the space, while the other dancer slid down off the piano and responded to the music in an entirely different fashion. The dancers were like two other instruments, part of the jazz. It was beyond description. I'm sorry each of you all were not there to see it. Joyful, humorous, wildly creative - that's all I can tell you. Dance - you've got to be there.

Choreographer and dancer Tom Brouillette blew me away. He performed an Allen Ginsberg poem, Father Death Blues in a solo dance performance that turned me inside out.

I had an incredible night - one of those nights when art changes everything.

Older and Reckless presents works by choreographers over 40, and many of the dancers are also 'older and reckless'.

I saw the 13th edition of this series. It actually took place nearly two weeks ago. I was waiting for permission to post these pictures, since I recklessly took them without obtaining consent (oops). There will be a 14th edition in February. I'll post more information soon.

I wish I could have photographed the work itself. I was actually crossing lines by taking pictures of this 'talkback' portion of the evening. There were five performances. I wish I had better photos to show you. These pictures are more a placeholder for me to mark the event.

I want to develop a focus on dance photography in the coming year. This performance brought together two elements for me - the moving body and the body in/over time - which are both so fascinating to me.

A lot of visitors to my site live in Toronto. I will be reminding you about the next Older and Reckless performance, coming February 28, 29 and March 1. I hope you will come out for what is sure to be a marvelous evening.

Sheldon Your enthusiasm is clear in your words and pictures. Her arms are fascinating aren't they!

It would be wonderful to be able to see photos of the performance itself too - I hope you get that opportunity.
