actor's headshots

2008.01.10

Jake is an actor. We tried a few different styles today, to give him a variety of choices. It was a fun shoot, and I plan to do some more actor's headshots.

I'm pleased with how these came out. Jake has a great attitude and he's easy to work with.

A note on lighting: I hung a muslin backdrop and used mostly natural light, but it was getting late in the day, so I added a halogen light with a makeshift parchment diffuser over it. My friend scott - previous post - had pointed out that halogen was pretty clean light, and he's right - it worked quite well.

I'm making a set of muslin curtains to control the light if it's too bright in the morning. the three large windows face southeast, south and southwest, so the light can be nice there. That day, we were late in the afternoon, and there wasn't enough light. I'm also going to make a few cloth backdrops so I can have some different textures for headshots. I put two loops in the cieling to hang a copper pipe for draping cloth. a makeshift setup, but it worked very well.

I haven't been posting as often as usual lately, because my mother is not well. She is in the hospital, and she is feeling awful. I like to be there with her later at night, when the hospital is more quiet and we can turn off the bright lights and talk. This is a difficult time and a close time for us.

Thanks to all of you who support me by commenting thoughtfully on my work, taking time to check my blog, and generally being a great community of photographers and friends.

bamommy Nice set. He is a really handsome guy. I don't know him but it seems as if you've captured his personality. I always enjoy your photos

DancingDolphin Excellent portraits!

Sheldon Such a variety. I would suppose it was likely the intent to present him as possible for a wide span of roles and achieved that goal. Great subject.

Madoc Well done portraits, as usual here.
Nice to have tried different styles.
He seems like a good actor: On each shot, he looks like another person!

Photokina so sorry about your mother, I hope she will be fine soon.

????? Dude could play Jason Priestley's son.

Much love to your mother. Take her some alcohol hand cleaner - hospitals are full of nasty germs.

t2d4th These are really good. How did you light the indoor shots?

My prayers are for you and your family. I went through a tough time with my mother in the hospital about a year ago. It was the most difficult thing I had ever gone through. I will pray for you and your family during this tough time.

lexlevans oh i hope your mother starts feeling better. she should know that all of us on photoblog are thinking of her and you in these hard times! as for the photos - i love #2, he looks slightly surprised, yet happy to see me, haha.

JuliaGotz I took out the one you called dweeby, because you were right. I realised this other shot was way more sexy - it's the expression on his face - the other one was just too keen.
JuliaGotz · 2008-01-12: 20:15
tortoise Too keen. *chuckle*

Fine shots. I love to see your new direction (artists of all sorts), and the lighting ideas sound fantastic.

EddieD125 I like them all, 1 & 2 I liked best, clothes with background do it all, as an actor probably knows. Very very good shots, and I'm sorry for the stress you must be going through with your mom. I can only pray it works out well..... Great shots as usual...... :)

????? My fav is #4, it's like a "really" actor's portrait. The last one is a bit too macho for me... i've got the feeling, that he is a more deeper personality than just looking good. ;)
Best wishes to your mum, I belive that our soul can heal ourselfes - or make us sick, sometimes. Be strong, and take into the hospital the healing toughts from some photoblog-friend-strangers.

aknor These are all very good - enjoyed reading the comments about them, too.
All the best to you and your family - good that you can be right there with her when she needs you! Lots of positive thoughts headed your way from mine.

graphyphoto these are some great shots! although the transformations could have gotten wilder (some of use are rather rough-styled - but some are not, and don't even have to be!) all in all, great job and lottsa talent here!

ps. ...or even two talents - was that supposed to become a tom-hanks-look in no.4?
graphyphoto · 2008-01-16: 20:06
Janiee I love how he looks in spec =)
