the very first moment that the dancer emerges into view.

My first experience with theater lighting. Thanks to Sam for some tips that saved me some trial and error in the first few minutes.

Creative, intriguing, moving work.

These photos were taken during the dress rehearsal of Dance Inside Out. If you live in Toronto, make the trip to York University to see this show on Thursday or Friday.

This was the first work of the night, Radiance, choreographed by Holly Small and performed by Keiko Kitano . A screen of smoke descended onto the stage, and images of the dancer were projected onto it, so as she moved in the space, she was always in a relationship to the dramatic still photos, and finally disappeared into/behind the screen itself.

from the news release:
Small’s new solo, choreographed on her department colleague Kitano, features original music by Governor General’s Award-winning multidisciplinary artist and York alumnus, John Oswald, and video projections created by Small and Oswald. Cutting-edge fogscreen technology allows Kitano to move through the video image, which is projected on a surface made of very light mist.

I have just come home from the performance, and don't have much time tonight to edit images or write much. I hope I will be able to add the dancer's name and more information tomorrow.

Tomorrow, I will post images of Claudia Moore performing works by Carol Anderson - the same work that she was rehearsing in a set I posted last week.

This has been a special night. It was FREEZING out, with a chilling wind. York University seems to triple the wind chill factor. Kudos to every student who has ever earned a degree there. How fortunate I was that my GREAT friend Dawn offered to come with me. If I'd had to take the bus there and back, it would have been a very tough night!

focussed Clearly no editing of images is required here. #2 is wonderfully captured. She looks angst ridden and the lighting in your photo emphasis this.

Fasterbit Usually you can not use flash in theaters, so shooting pictures in such low light conditions is always a challenge. It needs fast lenses and possibly a tripod for avoiding motion blur. Moreover, lights change suddenly because choreography reasons and you must be very quick before they fade into black. great set julia!
Fasterbit · 2008-01-31: 07:37
DancingDolphin These would be challenging shots, you did well. I think #4 is special.
