Playback Creatures: the first story

2008.04.06
A member of the audience shares a story about finding a lost kitten. Thinking that it is abandoned, she takes it home and attempts to care for it. The kitten is to young to eat on it's own, and is not doing well.

She can't sleep, and at dawn she is wide awake, sensing somehow that she is called outside. She looks around - stillness, nothing there. She calls out softly 'mummy cat. mummy cat'.

She senses something behind her, looks around, and there is the mother cat, looking at her.

don't go away! I'll be right back!

When she returns with the kitten, the cat is gone. She calls out again, and again, she senses something behind her.

The mother cat appears, and the kitten runs to her.

The mother creeps away with the kitten, her eyes locked on the woman the entire time.

When the woman looks for them, they are no-where to be seen. She is alone in the stillness of the morning, left with the mystery of the experience.

This is the first story in a night of Playback Theatre. The theme of the night is creatures great and small. An audience member tells this story, assigns an actor to play hersel and then, without rehearsal, the actors perform it.
