sting

2008.04.26
I was thinking about Socrates as the Gadfly of Athens when this wasp flew into my front room and trapped itself against the window. I knew she would keep banging against the glass until she got tired and then the cat would get her so I caught her in a wine glass and took some pictures before releasing her outside.

I'd always had that reflex fear of wasps and bees, but watching this one up close melted my heart.

the state is like a great and noble steed who is tardy in his motions owing to his very size, and requires to be stirred into life. I am that gadfly which God has given the state and all day long and in all places am always fastening upon you, arousing and persuading and reproaching you. And as you will not easily find another like me, I would advise you to spare me. -- Plato

A gadfly is probably more like a horsefly, but there are many ways to be stung.

I value the people who sting me awake - sting me into consciousness.

According to the Schmidt Sting Pain Index, a Yellowjacket wasp scores a 2.0 out of 4 on the pain scale. "Hot and smoky, almost irreverent. Imagine W. C. Fields extinguishing a cigar on your tongue."

Emma I have the worst fear of wasps and your post is giving me hives just looking at the pics!! We had a nest a couple of years ago at the back of the house and the wasps were crawling from underneath the floorboads...urrrgh.

Seriously, they are great pics though and kudos to you for being so brave! I like the last pic too; it's good to have someone like that in your life, someone who keeps you on your toes...

Askrubies wonderful post here...

stormfish you have a certain line of masochism inside you... right?

as for the bee, it's no challenge. it just tries to survive, and what did you? catch it under a glass...

now, if you'd like to tell us something about the anatomy and physiognomies (and possible psychology) of bees, THAT would be a challenge!

i'm listening! :-)

ainhoator Was once stung by a wasp and it hurt...now, the photos are great and the bug beautiful.

Nonetheless, I find disturbing the fact of someone taking the pain of writing a paper on stings including such humorous descriptions of pain. :D

ungabunga Quick! Hide these from Emma..........hang on - too late. Doh!
ungabunga · 2008-04-29: 13:19
Eddie Those were outstanding photos and I really feel you did a great job getting the close up. And well as you I guess saw, they are another link that has a valid chain to the balance of this wonderous world. Personally I hate killing any bug, spiders as well. They are only doing what nature intended. As for their sting or bite? Not near as bad as some 2 legged creatures I've met in my 60 years. :)))))

bacco66 Excellent. I imagine it finally got freedom :-)

gderuiter I so appreciate posts like yours that offer so many angles of subject for consideration. And your images of the insect in the goblet are both gorgeous and meaningful. Thank you.
