Jon-Paul Khouri: part 1

2008.05.09

Jon-Paul is an actor. I'm hoping some of these work as headshots.

The challenge of midday sun - we found ways to work with the strong light. We'll probably do another shoot later in the day to work with more radiant light.

to me he looks like a French soldier from another era

Jon-Paul, John Paul

If I could only post one, it would be this one.

This is the way I like to work - a genuine conversation interspersed with photography, and working with someone who is willing to be seen. Jon-Paul has energy and self-awareness. As an actor, he is more at home with physical self-expression, and that makes it fun to work with him. Yet he can be himself.

For a long time, I pushed people around me to let me take pictures. I wanted to reflect the beauty I saw, and put a lot of effort into trying to get images that they could feel good about. I was a pest. It was painful for me too - to get what I thought were good, beautiful images, and then find that the person was really unhappy with them.

Now I prefer to wait and work with people when they feel ready to be mirrored in this way. In part, this depends on the other person's acceptance of themselves physically at that moment in time. I know for me that acceptance comes and goes. Physical changes are difficult to embrace.

It is always risky to be photographed, so it takes a desire to balance out the discomfort. Myself, I have such a strong, awkward hunger to be seen, and I tend to assume everyone else does too.

kyira great series and a great person to photograph!
My father was a passionate photographer and as a child i was one of his objects. I for one never wanted to be seen, for me it was painful and i also felt my father doesn´t want me as a person, but only uses me as an object for his obsession photography.
Therefore later for many many years i hated when somebody pointed the camera at me and i also never never liked to take pictures of another person, because i assumed they would feel the same way i did-do, that i only use them and don´t respect them as a person. It´s interesting how our own experiences shape the way we work as photographers. I´m only in the process of learning to accept portraits both ways as a model and also as a photographer.

I just hate it when a guy's hair is prettier than mine..;)

I love 2 ... there is something just so ooooo la la about that pic... it should be a poster...

the whole set is gorgeous and you captured so many different facets of him.. his personality shines thru .. I see strenght and a cool calm but he really could be a bad boy too...

I really think I would rate these portraits at the top of what you've done but who am I to say ...

my fav is still the little old lady on the bus..

truly delightful set of revealing pictures... I love when you can see THE person in a set.. NOT just what they look like...

pattyb If Jon-Paul doesn't make it in the business I'll be shocked!! You have captured him beautifully. Strong, determined, happy, playful, intense, an amazing sense of self is wildly apparent in these shots.

Bravo to you Julia and best of luck to Jon-Paul!! ; ))

monkeyface I like #1, 5, & 11 best. They seem to capture his personality well.
He's easy on the eyes... :)

Ed1973 You are right, the last shot is great, especially as it shows a different personality to his face. Added to that, the depth of field and background really help to fill the image.
Ed1973 · 2008-05-13: 11:20
Sheldon So varied are the looks in this selection. I do see the strength of the last one but I find the patchy brightness of the background distracting? #5 and #3 are also top picks for me.

kware that last one is wonderful!
