I'm cheating when I photograph dance. The dancer, choreographer and lighting designer have made all the creative decisions, and I catch what I can. What I like is that I provide a record of their creation. It is an opportunity for me to learn and to contribute something. Also, seeing the images afterwards leads me to contemplate what I've seen.
The biggest risk for me in the dance photography so far was to ask for the opportunity to be there.
I have some ideas about what I want to photograph in the coming weeks: mixed martial arts, boxing and other forms of fighting. Before I start taking pictures, I want to watch for a while. I have some hunches about what I want to capture, but I know very little about those sports, so I'll see.
to call dancing "work" makes me always frown. i know, i know, my view point is unfair without end, but anyway... these gestures, do they mean anything?
Ah, but their creative decisions frame an expression in the space of the stage or studio; your frame is in momentary rectangles. You, too, decide/anticipate/prepare.
