Round-tailed ground squirrels are social, living in small colonies in dense sandy areas. These little creatures are well designed for digging in the dirt. They dig burrows to live in and retreat to for safety. They are active in the morning and late afternoon, munching on green vegetation, seeds and sometimes insects.

The ground squirrel uses whistles as a type of alarm signal when predators are sighted. Although it resembles a tiny prairie dog, and shares some of its habits, the two animals are not related.
