THE WILD CARROT

2010.07.13

The Wild Carrot (Daucus Carota) or Queen Annes Lace is one of many umbelliferous plants to be found growing around the world. Although the species name for this ferny plant with the elegant, white lacy flowers is "Daucus carota", the same one used for cultivated carrots it is not the same plant. As a member of the carrot family it has a long taproot and lacy leaves. Dig up and crush a Wild Carrot root and you will find that it smells just like a carrot.

????? Very interesting. New to me as well. Is it edible?

????? In Berditchev I saw huge weeds that looked like Queen Anne's lace, but were about 7-8 feet tall!

RayNvb I think the butterfly I shot today was on one of these plants. They do look lacy.

HoosierAtHeART Wow! I did not know! Now that I think of it the leaves have some similarity! I just remember it was one of those "flowers" I would pick and my Mom would tell me they were weeds.

djnana That was fascinating info and a fabulous image! Around here, we dip the stem of QA's Lace in colored water and it makes a beautiful summer wedding flower in whatever shade the bride wants! They're really gorgeous this time of year. TFS!
djnana · 2010-07-19: 21:53
MoMac very delicate I thought that queen anne's lace had a tiny touch of red in the middle though. With a story legend that the queen pricked her finger while sewing lace and a drop of blood landed on it!!
