eating alone. . . amended

2008.04.28

D200 with empty chair

The real story: see footnote

"We should look for someone to eat and drink with before looking for something to eat and drink, for dining alone is leading the life of a lion or wolf." --Epicurus

I felt quite independent until I met Howard. A company transferred me to the East Coast. Howard acted as if he were taming a wild animal slowly. He brought me ginger snap cookies he had baked. Several times he brought me a rose from his garden. He wasn't my "type." He thinks in zeros and ones.

But gradually we came to know one another. I don't know when I realized it, but Howard became my ballast. Thinking in binary terms balanced my flaming independent, now-fading, red-headed emotional streak.

So much so that now, barely a day into his business trip back east today, I am startlingly aware of feeling alone. Not lonely. Alone.

I prefer to think that I've not lost my independence. Merely that I'm temporarily missing my best friend and lover. (Is this an R-rated photoblog? May I write that word here?) Best friend and IT support. I am using his Nikons, so I'm sure he'll return.

Besides, I will eat from soldotnamanda's pottery. And read from a book another friend recommended, just as he recommended this photoblog. Guess I'm not truly eating alone.

Footer: This is just a maudlin ode to my guy on a business trip.

This is the real story. I eat at the counter. I don't look at what I'm eating. Eating bores me. Books and computers and walking the Labs--fun! But not fun if one passes out from lack of food. Hence, eating to survive.

cobaltbutterfly Did you ever realize that they usually don't make tables for one? We can certainly understand why, can't we? PCA

jenjung I hope he comes back soon. Is it a permanent transfer? It's strange, not realizing how much someone has become a part of your life until they are gone. I hope things work out : )
jenjung · 2008-04-28: 10:17
carmitage Very beautiful set, the light and framing give a peaceful atmosphere,
obviously not a long separation, may be a bit of frustration ?

sunshineand hey there...i hear you all got a little more snow!
i have friends in anchorage...sooo wanting to garden right now.
how about stick a table cloth and a candle on that table and take another shot of it...add food too...cause i always like to see what people are eating :-))) good thing i do not have the food channel or i would never do anything but watch people cook.

nice shots!
sunshineand · 2008-04-28: 13:40
signsnwonders Thank goodness for the amendment..when I saw your beautifully set table for one and then looked at my half eaten peanut buter /bacon and banana sandwich..hold the bread.. perched next to my work files by the pc I felt terribly uncivilized..now at least I know there are two of us. :D

Jannie How brave of you to reveal your vulnerability to us, but most of all to your best friend. Lucky you! Now ponder that when you eat "alone"!
Jannie · 2008-05-01: 00:38
soldotnamanda ahhh, tim. H will be back in no time to fix your favorite meatlessloaf. Cutie. Wish I was there to eat with you (even if you find eating boring) and walk the labs with you! love, moto
