Chugach peaks -- you decide

2008.05.14
"You must love the crust of the earth on which you dwell more than the sweet crust of any bread or cake. You must be able to extract nutriment out of a sand-heap. You must have so good an appetite as this, else you will live in vain."
- Henry David Thoreau

This is same image before desaturating it almost completely (as above). The image was stopped down about a half. I used a bit of curves, only. The blue tones predominate in sky and peaks. Can you tell me which works best for you? (Other than a crystal clear day -- soon to come, I hope!) .

The Chugach mountains just to the east of us appeared today in between cloudy, windy weather, with a few sprinkles. And sun. It's true; if you don't like the weather, wait a few hours. Or minutes.

Trees and some bushes have buds beginning to unfurl. If you squint, a stand of birch trees has the lightest tint of green. Spring!

For some breathtaking shots of Tazlina Glacier and Matanuska Glacier taken from a small plane, visit yellowperil's site.

LastFrontier At this point, I added the second image, to see if I could get some feedback. Thank you!

joycephotography Very nice ..

georgiahurst I am a lover of B-W photos both are good... in this case I personally prefer the second with just that hint of coolor..... and the tree in the foregound gives you added depth.
georgiahurst · 2008-05-14: 13:30
kazshots like the first one best, don't really like the colour of the sky in the second one but it's still a nice shot.
kazshots · 2008-05-14: 13:48
jagungal Both images are fine Jan, and neither is really "better" — it just depends what effect you like. Personally I prefer the second which is very pleasing. (My only tiny suggestion would be to darken the sky a little — if you can manage this with whatever software you are using.)
jagungal · 2008-05-14: 16:29
glennis Lovely shot! I prefer the first one.--can't explain why!
glennis · 2008-05-14: 16:46
storytaylor definitely for me is the first one. dramatic and powerful. but it´s only me
storytaylor · 2008-05-14: 16:48
LotoFoto Beautiful! Not sure which one I like better :)
LotoFoto · 2008-05-14: 18:38
leocheung Both are fine though I'd like a bit higher contrast one both ones and a bluer sky on #2.
The landscape is just spectacular!
leocheung · 2008-05-14: 20:20
Peche I like the first shot; it has a more natural contrast and a depth because of that.
The second is also good, though, and conveys the feeling of coolness and vastness really well in the enhanced blue tone...
Peche · 2008-05-14: 23:54
Emma Simply beautiful. I feel the fresh mountain air from just looking at your shots.

I really like Thoreau's quote; it works well with the image.

#1 seems to stand out more for me, although I feel more of the fresh mountain air from #2.
Emma · 2008-05-15: 02:06
mahdisafarali the second one is fresher, i like it more :) the quote is really good :)
mahdisafarali · 2008-05-15: 06:21
photopoet The first works for me—but if all I viewed was the second then I'd probably think that one was perfect. I do like the semi-frame of trees. That Thoreau quote is so apt. I love how succinct the words and how expansive the thoughts that it provokes.

Your "crust" is stunning.
photopoet · 2008-05-15: 06:25
relee I like the black and white, Ansel Adams came to mind =)
relee · 2008-05-15: 07:03
curlyq60 wow you captured this ....it is stunning! ! !
curlyq60 · 2008-05-15: 08:51
rolpa Both are interesting. There is subtle gradation of the greys in #1 which is very appealing. Thus, on consideration I'd go for #1 but it is a close thing. Great quote.
rolpa · 2008-05-15: 22:54
lordofthemoon i think both are wonderful (:
lordofthemoon · 2008-05-17: 13:47
ScubaLiz Impossible to choose, I like them both very much!
