A slimy splake

Here's my husband with a 13" splake he caught while we were ice fishing. What I don't get is why it's called a splake. It's a cross between a lake trout and a brook trout. Shouldn't it be called a blake or a lakrook? Where is the "sp" coming from?

Ah-ha! Now I can impress all of the fishermen I know with my knowledge of splakes. :)
