The white blotches closest to the car are hail. They were nickel-sized, which seems small until they're hitting your car.

On our way home from my parents' summer house, we drove through a thunderstorm that had some pretty big hail. It's really hard to see it in the picture, of course, and I tried to get out of the car to take a closer picture but as soon as I opened the door I got soaked.
