Today Jeanne and I volunteered for Toys for Joy through our church at Memorial Park in Barrio Logan. It was a joint effort with three churches and the Convoy of Hope organization to feed, serve and distribute toys, groceries and clothes to 15,000 fellow San Diegans. They had 10,000 bags of groceries, 30,000 articles of clothing, and 10,000 toys to give away! All of this was donated by the caring community of San Diego to help those in need. They also provided health services, hair cuts, family portraits, and more. The weather got pretty bad and rained steady, but the families waited in line and endured. We were in the kids carnival, but only saw a few because of the rain, but the few we did see made our day. They were so excited to play a few cheesy games for candy and test their skill at our ring toss booth. We saw one little boy wearing shoes way too big for him, breaks your heart to see kids without the basics in life. We left in the afternoon drenched and covered in mud and just washed up and relaxed. Later we went to Little Italy to get some dinner and enjoy the atmosphere. We had to get a desert from Cafe Zucchero, place is too good to pass up. We got a new camera today since our old one's crapping out again and it seems to take some nice shots so far. All the shots of Little Italy are with our new camera. For the rest of the pics from the day go to my Flickr album HERE since I can only put five pics in my blog. I was impressed with how much Convoy of Hope does for the poor and in need, they go all around the nation doing 50 of these one-day events in communities a year. They're also the first responders to natural disasters like 9/11, Katrina, and the Samoa Tsunami and feed 21,000 people around the world each day. Check out their site HERE and give a donation if you can to help a good cause and feed hungry children around the world.
