When we arrived at 6:15 or so, things were already well under way

Clog dancers with tassel-y things. That's a Swedish nyckelharpa that he's playing there, cool

I love the dance with the sticks; it's wonderfully rhythmic and especially when the guys do it it looks like they're going to clobber each other

Very vigorous for 6:00 in the morning! Someone in the neighborhood always ends up calling the police.

Sword dancers in Hawaiian shirts. This is Takoma Park, after all. What you can't see here is that they all have these flexible "swords" and they do this complex interweaving dance where they swords all end up intertwined in a star at the end

It ended in mass confusion with all the dancers and musicians doing a great big finale ensemble dance.

Afterwards the dancers whipped out these silly signs and had a hilarious silly protest march (again, this is Takoma Park...)

But see, it worked! The sun came up.

This is dedicated to megaera, a lifelong lover and supporter of Morris dancing. ;)
For a while now every May Day morning the folkies of Takoma Park have gathered by the Old Town gazebo to make sure that the sun comes up. As you can see, it worked once again this year.

I find Morris dancing hilarious. But not hilarious enough that I'd get up before the sun to watch it.

There's a theory that Morris Dancing is connected to Islam and whirling dervishes or some such. Other than that agree with Jen, not getting up that early for anything less than an international flight.
