To welcome in the summer, to welcome in the May-o

2010.05.01
pixel
When we arrived at 6:15 or so, things were already well under way
pixel
Clog dancers with tassel-y things. That's a Swedish nyckelharpa that he's playing there, cool
pixel
I love the dance with the sticks; it's wonderfully rhythmic and especially when the guys do it it looks like they're going to clobber each other
pixel
Very vigorous for 6:00 in the morning! Someone in the neighborhood always ends up calling the police.
pixel
An accordion AND a concertina! Lovely music.
pixel
Sword dancers in Hawaiian shirts. This is Takoma Park, after all. What you can't see here is that they all have these flexible "swords" and they do this complex interweaving dance where they swords all end up intertwined in a star at the end
pixel
Sun's starting to come up - it's working!
pixel
It ended in mass confusion with all the dancers and musicians doing a great big finale ensemble dance.
pixel
Afterwards the dancers whipped out these silly signs and had a hilarious silly protest march (again, this is Takoma Park...)
pixel
But see, it worked! The sun came up.

This is dedicated to megaera, a lifelong lover and supporter of Morris dancing. ;)

For a while now every May Day morning the folkies of Takoma Park have gathered by the Old Town gazebo to make sure that the sun comes up. As you can see, it worked once again this year.

JenPat I find Morris dancing hilarious. But not hilarious enough that I'd get up before the sun to watch it.

moxxxie 6:15am??? Was there a good crossiant involved??
moxxxie · 2010-05-02: 13:25
Liiisa Nope, just sufficiently awesomely random to get my attention! But then I've been getting up at 5:45 for years now.
Liiisa · 2010-05-02: 13:31
Oweena The jingle-bell shin guard thingys (of which I'm sure there is a proper name for) make me smile when I hear them.

JenPat >I've been getting up at 5:45 for years now

I always did think you were barking mad. Now I have proof!

websterella I wish I could read more of the signs.

MelanieO Fantastic. No May Day celebrations here, which the heathen in me really misses.
MelanieO · 2010-05-03: 05:01
scicaro :-)))) love big sticks and bendy sword dances
scicaro · 2010-05-03: 14:07
megaera Christ. If it's not art, it's goddamn Morrispillocks.

At least this lot, unlike the ones we saw in Michigan, aren't waving an enormous Union flag. I fled before anyone could hear my accent...
megaera · 2010-05-03: 17:39
Liiisa Ungrateful wretch! I should have dedicated it to scicaro, she understands. ;)
Liiisa · 2010-05-03: 19:53
KateR So much fun. :)

Quailia There's a theory that Morris Dancing is connected to Islam and whirling dervishes or some such.

Other than that agree with Jen, not getting up that early for anything less than an international flight.
