Maturing

2007.09.17

It's been exactly a year today since I bought my first real camera and this picture is just a celebration in my own little way about how far (I think) I've come in that year. It's a short time lapse of me and my dog out on a night shoot recently. Kinda a funky self portrait.

When I started I was all about using longish lenses and was a bit of a gear head. I had no idea of the triangle that shutter speed, aperture and ISO made up. I still chuckle at how I blow DOF far too often. Now the gear I lust after are wide angles and I'm really coming to see that digital has nothing on film. Is digital progress or just another part of this world that has become sterile, flat and without soul? It's become clear that having the best of the best equipment is nothing without the eye behind it. And why don't more people use more primes?

I've also come to the realization that for all of us our pics are just a reflection of our own worlds, our own minds. At the end of the day we see what we see and it's as simple as that. You can take me, you, and a dozen other photographers and say take a picture of that thing over there and not a single one of us would come away with the same picture. I find that really quite fascinating.

makaid I agree enthusiastically with this post! I bought my first prime recently and have found it to be the sharpest lens in my bag. I still plan on buying more equipment. However I am still on a quest to identify my own "style". Thanks for this post!
