Life, despite the desert.

2008.05.07
This one is my favorite! It stood about an inch tall, and the flower water about an inch across. What a compact little plant! In the middle of the hot, dry, sandy, desert...I just don't get it.

Found this one (and the above) in the graveyard area.

I wish I knew what these were. They're small bushes that look like they're purple-heather-grey when they bloom.

Of course, cactus. Still, the color is a bit shocking compared to the greys and browns that surround it.

Right out of a crack in the rock.

Love the color here.

These are all blooming and growing, despite the lack of moisture in the last three months or so. Truly I'm amazed at them! How is it they can grow, much less flower, without being watered?!

Also, because I've been working on my senior paper a ton recently, and it's mostly about renewable energy credits (aka, carbon credits), I thought I'd share this comic with you:

It makes me feel like I have no excuse when the plants in my apartment don't stay alive ;)

oldbabe Miraculous! I don't get out to the desert much (more like never) so it is glorious to see what survives there. I think of desert as sand, only sand, miles and miles of sand and sand dunes. Stereotypical, I know. But you are doing a good job of educating the ignorant (that would be me).

I don't really understand Carbon Credits (again, excuse my ignorance)...but when I first heard them talked about a while back I was trying to figure out how many carbon credits I have wrapped up in the hundreds of trees I have planted in the last 15 yrs in our woods. I would hope they would amount to something. But that's not what I was all about in planting them. I just do what feels right - no thinking involved.

ScubaLiz Awesome photos! How lovely they are. I don't get it either, but it always amazes me at the places various forms of life manage to thrive in. Nice post!

etodd80 Great contrast of colors with the ground. I think I like the simplicity of #1 the best.
