Eaten Alive

2007.07.11

Revitalized again

“And my shadow is back so stay cool in my shade“

This is my third posting of my favorite tree. (First posting Naked Second Puberty)

A sad story coming back from my holidays on my walk there the tree was bare eaten alive by cankerworms. However the tree is recovering and new leaves appear to my amazement to think that trees are like humans they fight and revitalize again. I am so happy.

Canker worms
The fall and spring cankerworms defoliate a variety of hardwood species in the spring. Hosts include the red and white oak groups, maples, elms, hickories, ash, and cherry. Heavy defoliation usually occurs in May and June, and can cause growth loss, mast reduction, and, if coupled with other stresses, may result in mortality.

A tree is a lens,
a viewfinder, a window.
I wait below
for a message
of what is yet to come.

jonrake Extremely interesting. Here in coastal New Jersey we have gypsy moths whose caterpillars are defoliating hundreds of acres of forests. It comes in cycles, this year being worse than last. There are some areas of the forest that look like January.

Years ago, they would spray, now spraying is eco unfriendly so the trees after 3-4 year of no leaves will die. A sad dilemma.
