Art in the form of graffiti (graffiti by style and considered so only if it appears on public or private property without permission) originated in the late 1960s, but graffiti in term of public and unsolicited markings has been around for ever.

No one can fix an accurate price tag on vandalism, which is not always reported, not always identifiable as such and covers everything from toilet graffiti to arson....Contemporary life invites the vandalistic act. The media play so endlessly on themes of violence and aggression that they become, to the young at least, an accepted part of life.

I think Graffiti is all about, being creative and pushing the envelope. Graffiti artists have always done just that--pushed the envelope. They have always looked for new and more interesting ways "to get up."
Some of the most common styles of graffiti have their own names. A "tag" is the most basic writing of an artist's name in either spray paint or marker. A graffiti writer's tag is his or her personalized signature. "Tagging" is often the example given when opponents of graffiti refer to vandalism, as they use it to label all acts of graffiti writing (it is by far the most common form of graffiti). Another form is the "throw-up," also known as a "fill-in," which is normally painted very quickly with two or three colors, sacrificing aesthetics for speed. Throw-ups can also be outlined on a surface with one color. A "piece" is a more elaborate representation of the artist's name, incorporating more stylized "block" or "bubble" letters, using three or more colors. This of course is done at the expense of timeliness and increases the likelihood of the artist getting caught.
A more complex style is "wildstyle", a form of graffiti involving interlocking letters, arrows, and connecting points. These pieces are often harder to read by non-graffiti artists as the letters merge into one another in an often undecipherable manner. A "blockbuster" is a "fill-in" that intentionally takes up an entire wall, sometimes with the whole purpose of blocking other "taggers" from painting on the same wall. Some artists also use stickers as a quick way to "get-up". While its critics consider this as lazy and a form of cheating, others find that 5 to 10 minutes spent on a detailed sticker is in no way lazy, especially when used with other methods
Although lots of writers would not want to be compared to gangsters, the two groups do have several things in common: "both seek recognition from their peers, use aliases, take part in illegal activities, see themselves as noble outlaws and are young and most often poor."
Dang! I'm honored for the consideration but not sure how deserving. This is a very good collection of images and the texture and colors are exciting to discover. I have always looked at different styles and tried to understand some of the techniques that are applied to the different surfaces. Thanks again Lumierenatural.

you very welcome I know how much you love color and how good you are presenting them in your paintings. I have enjoyed many of them on photoblog and thanks for sharing your work
Carley ,
All the Graffiti on this post is found here in my city mainly on and around very old steel train bridges and hidden from public. I walk under them often on my walks at lunch and can’t get enough of the colors used by different gangs trying to overpower each other. Most of this young people are gang affiliate spending night spraying under the bridges.
Your pictures make graffiti look very nice..in my area, it's not so nice..we had someone paint our stop signs and sidewalks recently..with black initials..
