The Jingle Dress Regalia
Jingle dresses feature several rows of jingle cones made from metal snuff can lids. Contemporary style jingle dresses are beautifully decorated with ribbon work and appliquéd designs and are worn with matching beaded leggings, moccasins, purse and hair ornaments. Dancers sometimes wear eagle or other feathers and plumes and carry a fan which is raised during the honor beats of the song. The contemporary style of this dance features intricate, controlled footwork and dancers demonstrate poise, endurance and grace.

First Nation Peoples of Canada attach special significance to the Eagle and its feathers. Images of eagles and their feathers are used on many tribal logos as symbols of the Native American Indian. To be given an Eagle feather is the highest honor that can be awarded within indigenous cultures.
Both Bald and Golden Eagles (and their feathers) are highly revered and considered sacred within there culture and religion. They are honored with great care and shown the deepest respect. They represent honesty, truth, majesty, strength, courage, wisdom, power and freedom. As they roam the sky, they are believed to have a special connection to God.
According to traditional native Indian beliefs, the Creator made all the birds of the sky when the World was new. Of all the birds, the Creator chose the Eagle to be the leader... the Master of the Sky.
Many dancers use Eagle feathers as part of their dance regalia. The Creek and Cherokee have an Eagle Dance. If for any reason an eagle feather is dropped, it needs to be cleansed. The arena director’s job is to guard the Eagle feather and not leave the spot it is in until the proper cleansing ceremony is performed

Traditional moccasins compliment the Jingle Dress regalia. Moccasins are generally fashioned after the traditional moccasins that Indian ancestors wore many centuries ago. The moccasins are made from buckskin, or doe skin. The moccasins are sewn at the seams with animal sinew. For decorative purposes the moccasins are painted with traditional colors and sketches, or are brightly hand beaded.

The dance is a rigorous and strenuous dance. The dancer must be in excellent shape and show much stamina to perform. Usually the jingle dress dancers are young women, although anyone at any age can perform the dance.

I am extremely fascinated with First Nation peoples here in Canada. Having the fortune to work amounts some of them brings me close to there ways of life and ethnicity.
I was at this Pow Wow two Sundays ago held at the Forks here in Winnipeg were I took this photos I want to share and explain a fraction of the culture.
The Pow Wow has been part of First Nation peoples life for centuries. The Pow Wow is a traditional gathering designed to promote brotherhood and goodwill among the people. Just as in days of old the meaning and traditions of Pow Wow still hold true today. Pow Wow is a very important part of the native culture today, just as it was centuries ago.
During Pow Wow you will witness many things of honor in the native society. One of the most traditional aspects of Pow Wow is the dance.
The dances have been handed down throughout the ages. What you witness today are the dances that were performed by the ancestors thousands of years ago.
At the Pow Wow you will see that dances are performed by both men and women. The performers are of all age groups. Dancers can be from the ages of toddlers clear into their nineties or one hundred years old. Each one of these dancers will perform a specific dance according to tradition.
One of the most unique dances performed by women is the “Jingle Dress"

Mabi,
It is a beautiful dance to watch listening to the drums makes my heart beat faster so haunting but still very melodious. As an imigrant in this Country I always feel honered to watch a POW WOW
beautiful set. i've never heard of a jingle dress before; i really like the idea of taking something castoff and transforming it into an instrument of beauty.
