The Canadian Loonie is hot and getting hoooooter

2007.11.07
Loonie is the name Canadians gave the gold-coloured, bronze-plated, one-dollar coin shortly after its introduction in 1987. It bears images of a common loon, a well-known Canadian bird, on the reverse, and of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.

The design for the coin was meant to be a voyageur theme, similar to the country's previous one dollar/silver dollar coin, but the master dies were lost by the courier service while in transit to the Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg. In order to avoid possible counterfeiting, a different design was used.

The coin has become the symbol of its currency. Newspapers will often discuss the rate at which the loonie is trading against the United States dollar. The nickname loonie (huard in French), initially a slang term for the Canadian dollar, became so widely recognized that in 2006 the Royal Canadian Mint secured the rights to the name "Loonie]

The coin -- an 11-sided polygon -- is made of Aureate, a bronze-electroplated nickel combination. The total composition of the coin is 91.5% nickel and 8.5% bronze. The bronze is about 88% copper and 12% tin.

Needless to say the average Canadian is very happy right now.

Some blurbs from the News.
The loonie, a sobriquet given to the Canadian dollar, worth a mere 62 US cents five years ago, reached parity with the US greenback in morning trading Thursday, amid soaring commodity prices and fears of a slumping US economy

Another day, another record for the rampaging Canadian dollar.
Canadians woke up this morning to news the loonie hit yet another high point, as it punched through the US$1.10 mark early this morning. The loonie is up almost two full cents against the greenback since Tuesday morning.

Cross-border shoppers will rob the Canadian economy of billions of dollars in economic growth, an economic think-tank is warning.

The surge in cross-border shopping due to the strong dollar, not to mention the slump in exports, could knock nearly three-quarters of a percentage point off growth in the Canadian economy, says Action Economics, an online economic research firm.

By the way the guy is not just any old guy but one of my sons.

jonrake nice series and now I am becoming an educated currency trader.

Many years ago, I remember going to Canada and buying clothing at tremendous prices. Now the tide has turned. Guess we'll see more Canadians on holiday at the Jersey shore this Summer.

Carley Let's hear it for the Loonie!! Go Canada!!! Even though it means that I'll probably not be able to afford any more of the Canadian Indian art that I love, I'm very happy for our neighbors to the north!
