To all photoblog devotees a great "2008"

2007.12.27
Churchill, Manitoba in Canada is called the "polar bear capital of the world". It is estimated that there are about 15,000 polar bears in northern Canada, and about 300 of them pass by or through the town of Churchill in the fall (September to November).

The bears inhabit the tundra surrounding the town as they wait for the water on Hudson Bay to freeze over. When the water freezes, their search for food will begin. The bears are starving for seals after a summer of nothing to eat.

The polar bear is a vulnerable species at high risk of extinction. Zoologists and climatologists believe that the projected decreases in the polar sea ice due to global warming will reduce their population by two thirds by mid-century. Local long-term studies show that 7 out of 19 subpopulations are declining or already severely reduced.

Madoc Very beautiful shots, and also touching when we read the text below.
These are such wonderful animals!

A truly great 2008 for you and everyone surrounding you too.

????? Did you know that despite appearances to the contrary, the polar bear's fur is not white. Each hair shaft is pigment-free and transparent with a hollow core. The bears look white because the hollow core scatters and reflects visible light, just as ice and snow does.

jetjackson I love Polar Bears, they are so majestic and powerful, although I am sure I wouldn't like to meet one face to face. :)

JuliaGotz Amazing. You must have had a long lens. They are, of course, extremely dangerous, especially with cubs. So sad to know they are fading from the earth. This is a tragedy that is, I believe, unstoppable.
